Pro Hardwood Care TipsMinimize
How do consumers maintain their wood floors? Can they damp-mop them?

No. A hardwood floor finished at the factory features three to seven layers of a UVcured polyurethane or acrylic. This finish gives the floor a tough, durable and smooth no-wax surface that is both luxurious and easy-care. However, water and wood don't mix. Do not damp-mop a wood 'floor.

The manufacturers recommend the best maintenance products and procedures. Your store likely sells those maintenance kits.

Teach your customer that routine, frequent maintenance will greatly lengthen the floor's life and beauty. Maintenance includes:
  • Every day, sweep the floors or use a dust mop. Do not use a household dust treatment (spray or oil), as they may cause the floors to become slick, or may dull the finish.
  • Vacuum the floor regularly, as often as you would vacuum carpets. Use the floor attachment, not the beater-bar, of course.
  • Clean the floor's coated surface with a lightly dampened cloth using a recommended cleaning product, and according to the manufacturer's directions for use.
  • Do not clean your wood floors with water or water-based products on a regular schedule. Clean only when necessary and clean only the soiled areas.
  • Never damp mop a wood floor. In all cases, use minimum water, because water causes deterioration of the wood itself, as well as the finish. Never let a spill of water dry on the floor.
  • Buy a "floor care kit" recommended by the installer or manufacturer, rather than counting on a homemade remedy of vinegar and water to clean your floors.
  • Different finishes have different maintenance requirements, and it's best to follow professional advice in this area.
  • Clean light stains by rubbing with a damp cloth.
  • Control humidity levels by using a dehumidifier or humidifier. You may need. to add portable units in some rooms.
  • Have your floors recoated periodically, as the finish shows wear.
